Roti Jala or Net Pancake is popular Malaysia tea time snack served with a bowl of hot curry dishes. Roti Jala has an appearance that looks like a ace doily due to the unique way it is made. This is a Malay traditional dish that is often eaten by every Malaysian nowadays and also usually served at special events such as weddings and festive seasons. Roti Jala is also included as a favoured dish during Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.
How is this dish be eaten? It is usually served in three to four pieces with curries especially chicken curry as a set dish to substitute rice. Besides, how is this dish taste like? The net bread has a similar taste as soft crepe with turmeric and coconut milk but it can absorb very quickly when it dip with curry.

However, to make this net bread, a special mold is needed. Previous years, there was a traditional mold made of brass and had three spouts on the mold but unluckily it is quite difficult to find these days and that is why plastic mold is replaced.

How to make Roti Jala? First, you must pour the thick batter into the mold with spouts below and then swirl the batter onto the frying pan to create a pretty yellow lacy patterns. It only takes few minutes to cook before it can be folded into little triangles or roll it into circles and served hot.
Simple ingredients such as coconut milk, turmeric flour, egg, water and a little bit of salt needed and you can make your own Roti Jala at home. Whisk everything together before you cooked it and it is done.

The curry is also quite important as Roti Jala is served separately with the curry and this is why the curry has to be thick with spices and the right amount of coconut milk so that it is not too strong.
Grab the opportunity to taste this tea time snack during festive season as Roti Jala is not a common daily dish that easily find in hawker stalls. Do visit the Ramadan bazaars before Hari Raya and buy a set to try.
Some useful information for my fellow readers. Ramadan bazaars are usually open at 4pm.
