Banana leaf rice loved by every communities in Malaysia and the origin of this dish is from India. Eating on a banana leaf is a novelty for Malaysians as well as foreign visitors. In Malaysia, banana leaf rice is categorized as a popular dish which is virtually an Indian thali (Indian name for a round platter used to serve food). This dish is originated from South India.

Based on the eye-catcher colors on the dish, there are a mound of plain rice served with three to four different vegetable dishes which include chutneys, pickles, fish, chicken and even crab curry poured over the white rice. As for vegetarian, they can choose either spinach or onion curries, a chickpea based curry and dhall as their accompanied dishes.
What would it be if a banana leaf rice without the crunchy pappadom? It is seriously incomplete! A pappadom is a large crisps made of chickpea, gram flour, rice flour and lentil. To make a complete banana leaf rice, a bowl of sour soup called rasam is served together with an option of plain yogurt. You can get this amazing dish with only five to six malaysian ringgit. Cheap and worthy!
